City of Lublin extensively celebrates 450 years of the Lublin act signed in 1569 by the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania

2019 is a significant year in the history of Poland and Lithuania. It marks the 450th anniversary of signing the Lublin act which was concluded by the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1569.


The Polish-Lithuanian was an important event not only for Lublin, Poland and Lithuania but also for the entire Europe, among others due to its peaceful, partnership and compromising nature.


On 30.06.2019, the representatives of the highest state authorities of the Republic of Poland and the Republic of Lithuania took part in the celebrations organized by the Chancellery of the Sejm and the Senate of the Republic of Poland. Marek KUCHCIŃSKI – the Speaker of the Polish Sejm, Stanisław KARCZEWSKI – the Speaker of the Polish Senate, Victoras PRANCKIETIS - the Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Mateusz MORAWIECKI – the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland participated in the official celebrations. Additionally, the high ranking guests from Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Moldova, Hungary, Belarus, Estonia and Latvia took part. First Deputy General Commander of the Polish Armed Forces MajGen pilot Jan ŚLIWKA also participated in the events. During the ceremony, the LITPOLUKRBIG was represented by the Command Group and the Flag Detail consisting of the officers from three nations.


Official ceremony began with a Mass in the Lublin Arch Cathedral. Then the representatives of the states, provincial authorities and the invited guests laid wreaths at the monument of the "Unia Lubelska".


The second day of the celebrations began with the special session of the Council of Lublin. After that a common photo against the background of the Lublin Castle in which the signing of the act of the of Lublin took place has been taken. Next, the participants marched to the City Hall, where the memorial plaque commemorating the event was unveiled. The celebrations ended with the laying of wreaths at the monument of the "Unia Lubelska".


“… It was in Lublin where as early as in the 16th century the Polish and Lithuanian ists showed their appreciation for the democratic values and ideas that would later lay the foundations for the European . Through the Act of the of Lublin, the city is thought to have become a source of what contemporary Europe is: a mosaic of many nations and cultures. Thanks to our 2019 celebrations, Lublin will be afforded the opportunity to remind the world of its central role in shaping the European Commonwealth of Nations.”, said Mr. Krzysztof Żuk, the Mayor of the Lublin.


In 2015, the City of Lublin and other institutions related to the conclusion of the of Lublin were honored with the European Heritage Label. The distinction is awarded to the tangible and intangible entities which are of a fundamental importance to the history of Europe and its cultural heritage.
